Ocean Torchbearers, let’s celebrate the power of the ocean together
Early results from the GSRC and how you can help.
Celebrating Sharks and the Divers Protecting Them
Happy Shark Awareness Day from all of us at PADI!
Today we’re celebrating two things:
The incredible sharks and rays that help keep our ocean healthy
The global community of divers helping protect them
Just weeks after launch, the PADI AWARE Global Shark & Ray Census is already generating valuable insights from divers around the world. In this email, you'll get an early look at what we’re learning through the world's largest diver-led citizen science program for sharks and rays, and hear directly from the people behind the project.
Global Shark and Ray Census delivers within
its first month!
“Data submitted through the PADI AWARE Global Shark and Ray Census (GSRC) have already contributed to a scientific paper currently under peer review. Scientifically verified images submitted to the GSRC by PADI divers helped confirm the presence of four shark and ray species in Vanuatu, including species listed as Vulnerable and Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. This highlights how citizen science observations can help fill critical knowledge gaps in data-poor regions by providing information that can support research, national biodiversity assessments and focused conservation efforts. It's an exciting example of how every verified observation submitted to the GSRC can contribute to real-world science.” James Cook University
Want to learn more about the Global Shark and Ray Census?
The future of sharks and rays won’t be shaped by researchers and conservation organizations alone. It will be shaped by people who care enough to get involved.
If you’re diving, take a moment to log your shark and ray sightings through the Conservation Action Portal. Together, those observations help build a clearer picture of ocean health around the world.
If you’re not diving right now, consider becoming a monthly supporter of PADI AWARE. Your contribution helps turn data into action.
So…what else can you do on Shark Awareness Day? A lot, actually.
Take the AWARE Shark & Ray Conservation Specialty Course
This course equips divers with the knowledge of the threats these animals face and the solutions helping to protect them.
Turn awareness into an unforgettable experience. Discover dive travel operators that help you encounter sharks with respect, care, and expert guidance. .
