When deciding to study marine biology, Asha de Vos was told there was no niche for that work in Sri Lanka. She had noticed blue whales lingering in Sri Lanka’s warm tropical waters year-round, research that led to her founding Oceanswell, the first marine conservation research and education nonprofit in Sri Lanka. There, she’s spent over a decade trying to protect the blue whales from various threats. The movement she kickstarted has also encouraged more Sri Lankan students than ever before to study marine biology. For her work protecting blue whales and inspiring Sri Lanka’s next generation of marine scientists, Asha de Vos is Scuba Diving’s November 2020 Sea Hero. |
