It was 3 in the morning. I could feel the 35 mph winds whipping through the mesh windows of my tent, jostling my only shelter with a shocking intensity. I was alone, wrapped up like a burrito in my down-filled mummy bag with only my face exposed. When the term 'travel writer' first entered my consciousness, this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. I had imagined traipsing through historic towns, taking in tropical sunsets, splashing into balmy waters and emerging to sip on a piña colada while bathing in the sun, a laptop full of notes and story snippets always nearby. But, although I love to laze on the beach with a good book as much as the next person, the gritty, bumpy journey make for much more lasting memories and an unbeatable sense of camaraderie. When Scuba Diving 's digital editor Alexandra Gillespie and I first dreamed up taking an ambitious local diving adventure, we wanted to incorporate our country’s incredible national park system with our own thirst for adventure and novelty. And so, a whirlwind 10-day camping, scuba and freediving adventure to Channel Islands National Park was set in motion. We hope our dive trip inspires you to get off the beaten path, out of your comfort zone, and into the unknown. — Ariella Simke, Associate Editor, Scuba Diving magazine |
