WHERE EVERY DESCENT IS ITS OWN EPIC EVENT Last month we culled together a community of divers for Legends & Lions, an event honouring the sport’s pioneers and hunting our destination’s most prominent marine predator. Enthusiasts spent the week exploring the Cayman Islands’ best diving, testing out new equipment and garnering lionfish culling certifications. The event’s finale was the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, where attendees paid tribute to the biggest names in the industry. Stay in touch for dates and deals for next year’s scuba extravaganza by signing up for the eBuddy Newsletter. | WILL YOU HEED THE CULL? A major threat to the oceans’ biodiversity, the invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish has grown from a local problem to a global issue. Since the species’ initial sighting among our waters in 2008, the Cayman Islands Department of Environment has banded together with local dive operators and researchers to control the predator’s population by providing culling certification to the general diving public. Indeed, the Cayman Islands has proven to be one of the few places on earth where the battle against lionfish is being won. But the war still remains very much in doubt. Join the hunt today! THE CAYMAN MAGIC REEF RECOVERY PROJECT This dire effort now has a name. The Cayman Magic Reef Recovery is an emergency volunteer project to rescue and revive coral reef damaged by a cruise ship. In August, a cruise ship dragged its anchor across 11,500 square feet of coral, ravaging it to what seemed to be beyond repair. Thankfully, local dive operators and the Cayman Islands Department of Environment have quickly banded together to try to help bring back the reef. By removing rubble and sediment, divers are racing against time to save what few corals are still alive. But time is ticking. SNORKELING’S BEST For those looking to take in our sunken sights without going too far from shore, snorkeling is a great option. Clear and current free, the water in Cayman lends itself beautifully to snorkel excursions. Of course, the world famous Stingray City promises excellent marine action just below the surface. Devil’s Grotto and Eden Rock are also awe-inspiring snorkel spots. Grab a mask and plan your trip today at www.caymanislands.ky. |
