This foundation was created to research, protect and conserve the large populations of marine megafauna including mantas, sharks, rays, other marine mammals and turtles. She completed the first-ever doctoral thesis on manta rays and discovered a new giant species of manta ray in 2008 - one of the largest new species to have been described by any scientist in the last 50 years. Andrea is known as the Queen of Mantas for her outstanding contribution towards a greater understanding of (and protection for) these gentle giants, and also from the BBC’s award-winning documentary on her life as a manta researcher. Andrea travels the globe researching manta rays and fighting for their protection. She continues to use hard science and visually stunning media to capture the world’s attention and focus it towards conservation. Andrea explains what you can expect during her expeditions on Arenui: “Explore new aggregation sites with us, encounter mantas in remote destinations, photo-document manta rays for upload to Manta Matcher, participate in research activities, investigate manta ray fisheries and receive lectures from world-class biologists as a part of your package. The goals of expeditions are unique but every trip is tailored to engage participants while producing high quality science.” Said best, in Andrea’s own words, “The oceans still have so much to offer us, so many secrets to reveal. We must continue to embrace research, exploration, and conservation. I still marvel at how little we know about our great oceans. This sense of the unknown is what should drive us.
