The Lulu: Alabama's newest reef wreck
The Lulu: Alabama's newest reef wreck
as she sinks below.

The LuLu, Alabama’s first purpose-sunk ship wreck suitable for scuba diving, has recently joined the largest artificial reef program in the United States approximately 17 nautical miles off Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Artificial reefs provide a sustainable, environmentally friendly structure for marine life to inhabit and scuba diving enthusiasts to explore. The newest reef wreck is at the perfect depth for beginner diver certification with 50-foot depth clearance at the top of the freighter while also challenging the experienced recreational diver with a bottom level depth of 115 feet. The marine village gathering in the caverns of its hull beckons.

After a stop at the LuLu, there are many other wrecks, natural bottom sites, bridge rubble and beach dive locations to continue exploring. The diverse marine life of the water just off the coast from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach makes every dive an opportunity to witness something naturally captivating.

The sounds of the surf and the sea gulls above will fade as you enter the quiet blue world. Explore the lower levels of the ship where Goliath groupers may lurk in the shadows. Flashes of sapphire and gold will catch your eye as tiny damsel fish take cover under the rainbow of coral slowly overtaking the rubble of a bridge. Hovering over the top of a shipwreck, you may find yourself swimming alongside a vibrant red snapper, a meandering octopus, or even a loggerhead sea turtle. This trip could be the “someday” you experience that extraordinary interaction with nature.
