Why Bonaire Tops Every Diver's Bucket List

Why Bonaire Tops Every Diver's Bucket List!

Bonaire reigns supreme once again, having recently received 17 awards in Scuba Diving Magazine's Readers' Choice Awards. Bonaire swept top honors, with more recognition awards than any other destination in the region, including five #1 ratings, proving the island’s dominance as the premiere dive destination in the Caribbean and around the world. For the 20th consecutive year, Bonaire has taken first place for the #1 Shore Diving Destination.

In the Caribbean/Atlantic region, the #1 rankings received by Bonaire include Best Macro Diving, Best Advanced Diving, Best Beginner Diving, Best Shore Diving, and Best Underwater Photography. The #2 rankings include Best Overall Diving, Best Value of Diving Dollar, and Best Marine Environment. In addition to its first and second place rankings, the island also was awarded nine slots out of 100 in the Top 100 Gold List, as voted upon by readers of Scuba Diving magazine.

Here's just some of the reasons why Scuba Diving’s loyal subscribers chose Bonaire as their favorite dive destination:

Best Macro Diving
Best Macro DivingBonaire has been known as critter-heaven for many years. With few exceptions, just about any dive site will provide an unlimited array of small creatures, enough to keep even the savviest of creature connoisseurs happy. The best method to enjoy Bonaire's macro creatures is to slow down and move carefully. Ensure proper weighting and then spend a whole dive on one or two coral heads--divers are always amazed at what can be found when one stops to see the nudibranchs! It's always helpful to bring along a large magnifying glass. If lucky, maybe a sighting of Trapania bonellenae will be a highlight, a new species of nudibranch discovered in 2007 by Bonaire local Ellen Muller and officially named as a new species in 2009!
Best Advanced Diving
Best Advanced DivingThose divers with experience who are looking for their next adrenaline rush need not look further than Bonaire. Although known for its easy shore diving, the thrill-seekers looking for more action can certainly find it down on the island's southern tip or east coast. Here, waves, surge and surf rule, and there are dive guides and dive facilities which offer guided shore dives to explore these more strenuous dives. Or, jump onto a boat designed specifically for east coast diving and enjoy the spectacular diversity of large animals--turtles, rays, green morays, and even the occasional curious shark.
Best Beginner Diving
Best Beginner DivingIt's always a good plan for beginning divers to do their first fifteen or twenty dives under the watchful eye of a dive instructor or dive master. All dive facilities which offer boat dives normally have a trained guide in the water to share their tips and make new divers into better divers. Those wanting to experience Bonaire's famed shore diving can hire a private guide for a variety of locations or dive sites. But the easiest is just a giant stride off a resort dock, a ten-foot descent, and then a short swim to the drop-off for a fun, easy dive. That's one of the best reasons to dive Bonaire: The "return" is so great with so little "investment!"
Best Shore Diving
Best Shore DivingBeing rated #1 for shore diving for the past 20 consecutive years pretty much sums it up: There is simply no better destination for the freedom and simplicity of shore diving than Bonaire. There's no running for the dock to make the boat departure, or getting up early, unless it's to make a dawn dive to watch the sun rise over the reef. Pack a picnic lunch, flip flops, and find a stretch of shoreline. Park the car and gear up. Some of Bonaire’s popular shore dives are Karpata, Ol' Blue, 1000 Steps, and Oil Slick Leap to the north; the wreck of the Hilma Hooker, Angel City, Invisibles, and Red Slave to the south. In the middle of the island, every resort's house reef is a favorite as well!
Best Underwater Photography
Best Underwater PhotographyWith the development of digital photography, even the most inexperienced underwater photographer can now bring home stunning images of Bonaire's reefs, divers, and marine animals. In recent years, several Bonaire diving visitors have won impressive awards and recognition for the images they took while diving on Bonaire. Bill Goodwin's image of a peppermint shrimp in a sponge with fantastic backlighting was taken at Margate Bay. This image was entered into a National Geographic competition with over 208,000 entries from 28 countries around the world, and this image was judged #1 in the nature division. But Bill is not the only one to achieve such photographic excellence. Dixie Greenwood's image of a feeding eagle ray won the PADI Dive Society 2011 competition, and was featured on the back of PADI Diving Society Cards. Her image was taken at Invisibles, at a depth of about 15 feet. The ray was feeding unconcerned a mere three feet away from Dixie! So, unbelievable images are the norm, when diving Bonaire.
